The MTD-500 universal testing machine enables tensile and compression tests. The measurements can be carried out in single measurements or in cyclic operation. This allows the analysis of the deformation and damage behaviour of compounds, consisting of PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) coatings and substrate materials, under tensile and compressive stresses. During the experiments, a servomotor transmits a rotary motion to a ball spindle, which has been preloaded. The spindle moves the sample holders in the horizontal direction by up to a travel distance of Lmax ≤ 40 mm. A calibrated force sensor is coupled with a displacement sensor so that the change in length of the force sensor does not influence the result and no corrections are required. Two different abortion criterions can be employed for the tensile and compression tests. In this regard, either the maximum force or the maximum travel distance can be specified. The evaluation of the results is carried out by analysis of the force-displacement curves or the stress-strain diagrams.
