Lecture and Exam information

All technical materials are exposed to environmental influences during their use, which can impair or destroy their usability. In the case of metals, corrosion causes a significant proportion of this damage. The course „Corrosion and Corrosion Protection“ will clarify terms, causes and magnitudes of corrosion. The class will moreover present theoretical basics of corrosion such as kinetics, thermodynamics as well as test methods of electrochemical corrosion and high-temperature corrosion, and explain and illustrate their numerous manifestations on the basis of practical examples. The class is divided into a lecture and an accompanying practical part. The lecture part will cover corrosion protection, suitable corrosion protection methods, in particular metallic coatings, thermally sprayed coatings and Physical Vapor Deposition thin coatings. During the practical part, students will carry out electrochemical test methods and analyze measurement results. In addition, students will have an opportunity to look into the world of coating processes and to jointly produce an industrially applicable corrosion protection coating.
